Highlighting the repression and arrests of Abzas Media, Toplum TV, Kanal 11, and Kanal 13, the EU delegation called for the release of individuals detained for exercising their fundamental rights, including journalists.
The European Union (EU) representation at the UN and OSCE issued a statement on November 8, the Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
In the statement regarding media representatives covering conflicts, crises, and emergency situations, attention was drawn to the arrests of journalists in Azerbaijan.
The statement highlights a concerning rise in the arrests of independent journalists in Azerbaijan, which appear to be politically motivated. It emphasizes the repression faced by media organizations such as Abzas Media, Toplum TV, Kanal 11, and Kanal 13. In response, the EU delegation has called for the immediate release of individuals arrested for exercising their fundamental rights, including journalists. They urged the Azerbaijani government to fulfill its obligations to the OSCE.
"COP29 is an opportunity for Azerbaijan to demonstrate that it is committed to protecting a free and independent civil society and media landscape," the statement emphasized.
The statement highlights that journalists working to provide reliable and independent information across various countries face numerous threats, including illegal arrests, violence, and even death. It specifically notes that the ongoing attacks on female journalists—both online and in person—hinder their social and political participation. This situation poses a significant threat to democracy.
The document continues by mentioning the deaths of numerous journalists and media representatives following Russia's military intervention in Ukraine. It notes that at least five journalists are currently imprisoned. Additionally, it discusses the repression, trials, and arrests of media representatives for their journalistic activities in countries like Belarus and Kyrgyzstan.
It was noted that attacks against journalists and media representatives should be investigated quickly, effectively and impartially, and relevant persons should be held accountable. It was emphasized that the European Union is committed to protecting media freedom and pluralism both at the global level and within itself.
The statement concluded by emphasizing the urgent need to appoint a new representative of the OSCE for media freedom. It called on all participating states to ensure the safety of journalists and to put an end to the prevailing environment of impunity they face.
