Following his criticism of the police, public activist Nijad Ibrahim was prevented from leaving the country with his family and was subsequently arrested.
His wife, Parvin Ibrahim, has reported that Nijad's health has deteriorated while he is being held in the Baku Pre-Trial Detention Center. "He is suffering from high blood pressure," she said to Abzas Media.
"He called today. His health is terrible. He had never had such an illness before his arrest. The doctors said that he already had high blood pressure. He said that his back hurts a lot. The usual wounds on his body do not heal for a long time. His condition had worsened before, and after the lawyer's complaint, the doctor examined him and prescribed medicine."
Parvin Ibrahim says that these medicines did not improve his condition, and his health deteriorated again.
"Being accused of nothing and detained in prison breaks his heart, I have no patience left. False accusations must be stopped," she added.
Nijad Ibrahim was arrested in Baku in early September. Before that, he had shared opinions criticizing the Azerbaijani police. At first, he was not allowed to leave the country, but a few days later, it became known that he had been detained as part of the incident.
He was charged under Article 126.1 of the Criminal Code (deliberately causing severe harm to health).
Abzas Media inquired about the issue with the Ministry of Internal Affairs but did not receive a response.
Nijad Ibrahim has been arrested many times before on various charges. He was last sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison in 2021 on the charge of violating the quarantine rules. Local human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.
